Assos of antique periods, present day’s Behramkalejs located just opposite of Midilli Island at coast of Edremit Bay. According to historical sources, the city had been established by Helene coming from Midilli. The city had been captured by Lydians and then entered into the rule of the Persian Empire. People who revolted against Persians were cruelly punished by Antaxyceres, Persian Satrap. With excavations started in 19th Century traces of city walls belonging B.C. IV. Century surrounding the antique city have been brought to light. In B.C. 11. and 111. Centuries Assos had been entered administration of the Kingdom of Bergama, become the center of bishopric at the time of Byzantium, and included in borders of the Ottoman Empire after the year 1330.
