Sanliurfa well-known as “The city of prophets” whose history for settlement dating back 8.000 B.C. has experienced several sovereignties such as Aramis, Parts, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Latin Earldom of Crusaders, Seljuks and Ottomans. The city is especially noted with its cave in which the prophet Ibrahim was born. It also draws attention with the lakes o[ Halil-Or Rahman and Aynzelihe (Balikh Lake) which are believed to have been formed at the place where the prophet Ibrahim was thrown into fire by Nemrut. Today şanliurfa has become a holy place to visit with its mosques or Halil-tir Rahman and Rizvaniye which are located next to Balikh lake. The prophet Ibrahim’s cave on the skirts of Urfa Castle is another holy place as known the place where the prophet Ibrahim was born and grown up. Urfa Castle on top of of Damlacik mountain overlooking the city dates back to Roman time. It is said that the two columns in 17.25 length inside the part facing the city of the inner castle are the legs of the catapults used to throw the prophet into fire. The touristic attractions to be visited for certain as follows: The cave where the prophet stayed when he got sick, Grand Mosque, Selahaddin Madrasah, the ruler Hasan Mosque, Archeology museum and the Covered Bazaar. Harran : Located on 40 kilometres away from the South of Urfa, Harran was one of the most important centers in its period between 2000 A.D. and 1300 A.D. It was ruled by Assyrians, Hellens, Romans, Byzantines, Emevis, Abbasis and Seljuks. In the Medieval Age the followers of Sabian sect living in cities worshipped to stars. Today Harran antique city ruins and conical houses resembling ant nests dating back to Roman and Byzantine time draw a lot of attention. During the Abbasis period Harran had the oldest university in Turkey as well.
