Bergama / Pergame
Pergame settlement has been located in Aegean Sea at just opposite of Midilli Island whose name was Lesbos in the time of Archaic Age. The first historical appearance of the city had occured in IV. Century A.C., and it has been located in Pergamon settlement of Hellenistic time. The major founder of Pergame Kingdom had been Lysimakhos who was a commander of Alexander the Great. In 150 years power period of Lysimakhos and in the period of his followings, Pergame Kingdom had lived its golden age and the Kingdom have been equipped with magnificent buildings. After the death of King II. Attalos, the city had been taken under power of Romans. Pergame Library, with its about 200.000 written documents on parchment papers, was counted as the second biggest and material rich library next to Alexandria Library. Afterwards, significant amounts of these parchment papers have been presented to Kleopatra by Roman Emperor Marcus Antonius. In IV. Century A.C., Selcuk Turks got hold of the city. As a result of acheological excavations that have been started in XIX. Century B.C , many very important finds about historical existence of the city have been brought to light. When visiting Pergamon Acropolis, there are Zeus, Athena, Dionysos and Serapis Temples, the palaces of King Attolos and King Eumenes, double column portic, many stores, cisterns and many other remnants are to be visited. In addition to these remnants, at the end of XIX. Century A.C, the fresco embellishing of Zeus Temple Base which is one of the seven wonders of the archaic world and the pieces of sculptures showing the battle of the Gods against Titans have been brought to light and they are being exhibited in Pergame Museum, nowadays.
